Guru Melattur Late Sri S Natarajan

Kalaimamani, Sangeet Natak Academy awardee, Natya Kalanidhi,  Bhagavata Lasya Nipuna

Grasping the texts and nuances of Bhagavata Mela and the Natya Sastra treatises with ease, Guru S Natarajan took up to performing leading heroine roles from his age of 16 (sixteen), while his initiation into this ancient art began very early age. With his innate potential, he was different from the others of his ilk; interpreted what and how he should perform; adept enough in picking up the interpretations for different abhinaya, he brought in
a new lease of life to the art form by strictly adhering to Natya Shastra treatise. He revived the age ole Purva Ranga Vidhana in the natakams and also brought to life the Varnana Dwipada through dance. With his mastery over “abhinaya” and “nritta”, his portrayal of lady characters is charming and
acting a total flow of “poetry”. So rich and apt were his portrayals that any deviation from the style of presentation would theatrically devitalize the charm of the character in its totality. His style of dancing, interpretation of verses, “sancharis” and stage presentation were inspirational and are widely followed today by other Bhagavata Mela troupes in and around Melattur. From the year 1990, he has started performing male roles too. He is at his best form bringing life and vigour to the characters. His dancing fetched him and the art form a vast applauding crowds, good press and the lens of satellite media. Taking Bhagavata Mela to the world stage at Morocco and France, guiding the young practitioners of varied art forms to pursue Doctorate in Bhagavata Mela tradition and presenting intriguing papers through his thought provoking Lecture demonstration on this dynamic tradition, were some of his innovative accomplishments.

A Collossal  figure in the realm of the ancient Bhagavata Mela tradition. An astounding dancer choreographer organiser, administrator, director and a pioneer in enriching  this 500 year old art form cradled in Tamil Nadu. 77 years of undeterred service committed to the higher cause together with his wife late Smt Anuradha Natarajan, who herself was a Veena player hailing from the artistic and illustrious CVS family, Thanjavur.

A purposeful life surmounted with mysticism and miracles with the bliss of Rudra Parameshwara and Sri Lakshmi Nrusimha! An immaculate Guru with 35 years of award winning service as an engineer for the Government of Dubai apart from nurturing young cultural ambassadors of our culture  in the UAE. His disciples from diverse socio ethnic groups  reflected his true artistic nature and a progressive teacher.

He also wished to pass on the nuances of the art of Bharathanatyam to youngsters from diverse  and economically challenging communities at his native village Melattur in order to sensitize  them through practising this art, enabling them to experience the bliss of the art form he practised, keeping them rooted to the ancient tradition with ritualistic customs and providing them tools to arm themselves with  self-sustenance. He aspired every child enrolled in this noble project to be true cultural ambassadors of our country. He wished his end be celebrated as a Natya Aradhana.
